Cartoonist Richard Thompson has passed away

I've been informed by Richard's best friend Nick Galifianakis that Richard passed away today due to the effects of Parkinson's Disease. We're poorer for his loss, but richer for his life and art.

Richard Thompson panel at 2011 Heroes Con

Heroes Con is going on this weekend in Charlotte, NC. Richard's mother was an orphan in the town, and the con is held right across the street from the former orphanage space.

We went down twice together, at the invitation of con owner Shelton Drum and his right-hand man, Dustin Harbin. Richard had a great time. Last night I stumbled across a recording that I had forgotten about, so I put it online.  I haven't listened to it since recording it, but here's Richard talking about Cul de Sac, and Parkinson's Disease.

Richard Thompson: A Celebration

Is Cul-De Sac the best comic strip being published today?
Perhaps, but one thing is for certain, it is the best drawn and the
funniest. Okay, that's two things. Please join Mike Rhode and
some fellow strip creators as we sit down and examine the art of Mr.
Thompson. In addition to discussing craft and daily deadlines, we will
see if Richard can provide any insight as to whether poor Petey will
make it through the entire soccer season without having a psychotic
breakdown. Ahhh, total Bliss (haven).

Mell Lazarus 1927-2016

Today we lost Mell Lazarus, not only a LEGEND in cartooning but a contributor to Team Cul de Sac.

Mell was such an icon in cartooning that I was always nervous to look at him. It was like looking into the Sun. He was just a star and everyone orbited around him. A true sweetheart.
Mell called me back in 2011 and said that he had lunch with Cathy Guisewite and she had told him about TCDS. He wanted to contribute and I was thrilled.

Thank you and much love Mell,

Chris, Richard, Mike and the whole TCDS gang.

Please read more about him at the links below.

Compleating Cul de Sac book's latest contributions to Team Cul de Sac

Thanks to everyone who bought Compleating Cul de Sac and thus supported Team CdS in fundraising against Parkinson's disease. For the last quarter of 2015, you raised $144.41 which was deposited into Team Fox's account today.

The book is now out of print because we're adding to it and will have an actual publisher. Look for the 2nd edition of the book in Summer 2016 from Lost Art Books. Any profits from the book will continue to go to Team Cul de Sac.

Compleating Cul de Sac first edition goes out of print

Compleating Cul de Sac's first edition is now out of print, and it's good news!

We're pleased to announce that we (aka The Thompsons) are just about to sign the contract with Picture This Press for them to publish the grandly-themed Richard Thompson Library. Compleating Cul de Sac version 2.0 is being expanded by editor Rhode and designer Bono Mitchell with more interviews, more Thompson art and more Team Cul de Sac art, even as we type. Any profits from this book will continue to be sent to the Michael J. Fox Foundation to fund Parkinson's research, as we had arranged to do with the first edition.

The draft of The Incompleat Art of Why Things Are with an introduction by Joel Achenbach is in the hands of the publisher who's working with his designer on the book. Scott Stewart is continuing to work on a new collection of caricatures.
In the meantime, all of Richard's Cul de Sac books, and The Art of Richard Thompson are still available from his traditional publisher, Andrews McMeel.
We hope you'll enjoy the new books as they come out over the next several years .

 About Team Cul de Sac

Team Cul de Sac is a fundraising effort in honor of Richard Thompson, the cartoonist behind the Cul de Sac comic strip. Richard was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. With Richard's support, Chris Sparks asked cartoonists across the country to contribute comics compiled into a fundraising book published by Andrews McMeel (Team Cul de Sac: Cartoonists Draw The Line At Parkinson's). The original artwork was auctioned to raise additional money. Team Cul de Sac continues to progress and expand our fundraising efforts.

Compleating Cul de Sac raises $220 for Team Cul de Sac

After deducting the initial production expenses for 3 proof drafts, and the cost of an ad in Magic Bullet #11, the publication of Compleating Cul de Sac has raised $220 for the 2nd quarter of 2015 for Parkinson's research.

Here's more information on the book:

The Complete Cul de Sac isn't.

Complete, that is. Compiling it while ill, Richard accidentally left out some strips. Others were purposely left out, either because he had redrawn them for syndication, or they were too tied to the Washington, D.C. origins of the strip to make sense for a worldwide audience, or he "just felt some were not funny." Over 100 are not in The Complete CDS.

But if you're a cartoon completist, or just want a little bit more CDS, we understand and we're here for you. We've collected the lost water-colored Washington Post Magazine strips, the early inchoate musings about what the strip should be, the promotional material, the sketches for fans, and finally some fugitive Team Cul de Sac charity art by Art Spiegelman, KAL, Patrick McDonnell, Eric Shansby, Nate Beeler and others.

With Richard's blessing, or at least active acquiescence, any money the book makes will go to Team Cul de Sac to fight Parkinson's disease.

And if more art surfaces, we'll do a second edition.

John Cuneo on Richard Thompson

"I've also been looking closely at the aforementioned book of Goya's etchings, Ronald Searle's remarkable drawings in The Second Coming of Toulouse-Lautrec, and The Art of Richard Thompson. For me, Thompson's work has the capacity to conjure both inspiration and despair. I take it in small portions, no more than three or four pages at a time so as not to give up hope entirely."

Fifth Anniversary of Team Cul de Sac is upon us: DONATE ART

Lots of candles on that cake you say? 5 years already you say? Still going strong in raising awareness and money for the Michael J Fox Foundation?  The answer is yes. Five years of and over $200,000 of donations and we are still going strong. Want to know a secret? I wish I had never had to start this.
I wish Richard Thompson was still drawing Cul de Sac and instead of planning this years Drink and Draw at Heroescon, we were planning on Richard and Mike Rhode visiting Heroescon and us seeing old friends, having Fuel pizza, going to Merts and having craft beer from Asheville. Life is life and we roll with it. Instead of doing nothing we have done something. Something good and something to be proud of.
If you have never had a chance to help here is your chance. On the evening of Friday June 19th (also my 45th birthday) we are having our Team Cul de Sac Drink and draw in Charlotte, NC after the first day of Heroescon! More details soon on all the details but first we want to ask for help. Below you see Alice jumping on her manhole with her Team Cul de Sac shirt on. She has been our mascot for 5 years! With our Drink and Draw coming up, I thought it would be nice to have a 5 year anniversary print only available at Heroescon. here is where you can help.  Donate art featuring the Cul de Sac gang. The theme is the 5th Anniversary of TCDS and the Drink and Draw. Go wild.
The winning entry will be picked by Richard Thompson, Mike Rhode and myself. All art must be mailed to us and even if your art is not picked you still win. You are helping us by donating the art to our Drink and Draw. The winner gets a really cool gift. How cool? Trust me its cool. All submissions must be in to me by June the 9th.  You can send a digital file to us at teamculdesac@gmail.com so we can catalog and promote the art but you are not entered into the contest until we receive the original art. Remember June 9th is the deadline.  If you are at this years Reuben awards you can give the art to Mike Rhode or myself.

Send submissions to
Team Cul de Sac
c/o Chris Sparks
54 Herron ave
Asheville NC, 28806

Plus, if you want to donate original art not related to the contest for the Drink and draw auction, please send it to the address above!

A superhero thank you to Heather, Seth and Shelton and everyone at Heroescon that supports us year after year.

Washington DC and the Reuben Awards

Next week I will be in Washington DC to see some old friends and meet new friends. We all have one thing in common, we love cartooning.  I have never met a nicer group of folks in the world.  My first Reuben Awards I crashed in my hometown of Asheville in 1997.  Sergio Aragones was nice to introduce me to just about the entire Gang of Idiots from Mad Magazine. A weekend I will cherish forever.

My next Reuben weekend (2011) was when our favorite, Richard Thompson won Cartoonist of the Year in Boston. I was raising awareness for our up and coming Team Cul de Sac project. Everyone treated me as family, Another weekend I will never forget.

Then 2012 rolled around and I ended up in Las Vegas for the Reubens. That weekend our Team Cul de Sac book was launched to the crowd of many of our contributors. Nervous, yes. Proud of what we were accomplishing HELL yes. Everyone was so supportive and again it was like the best family reunion ever.

The Reubens in 2013 turned out to be pretty awesome too. I was now a member of the best family ever. Oh and if that wasn't enough I had the privilege to play tennis with Bill Hinds and Rick Kirkman!

Here it is May 2015 and I am planning my family cartooning reunion in Washington DC. Next week I will be seeing Richard, Mo, Hilary,Rick, Shaenon, Andrew,Bill, John, Lucy, Lee,Tom,John, Nick and so many more. Family.

Remember being a blood related is just blood and it washes off. Good ink won't.

BTW, if you see Mike Rhode, please give him a inky hug. Mike is now a family member. Long overdue.

Compleating Cul de Sac draft in hand - a new Richard Thompson book coming soon

A Team Cul de Sac fundraiser book is coming soon!

Including all the art that was left out of Eisner-award-nominated The Complete Cul de Sac, it's 150 pages of strips, interviews and sketches.

We're pleased to provide more Richard Thompson for your viewing pleasure while supporting Parkinson's disease research.

Ordering information will be available soon after our crack team of editors (Richard, Mike Rhode, Chris Sparks and Bono Mitchell) carefully scrutinize the book to decide which errors and mistakes we can let slip through.

TCDS is not just about Richard Thompson

by Chris Sparks

Richard Morgan has a comics store in Greenville, SC. He goes to most of the conventions in the area including Heroes Con. He met us the first year we sold t-shirts and Alice prints for fundraising. He's supported us every year because of his dad. His father passed away this morning from PD complications.

I spent the afternoon with his dad on last year's Free Comic Book Day.  He thanked us for what we do and told me how much it means to him to see us raise money through cartoons.

When I saw Richard last month, he also thanked us and told me how much TCDS efforts mean to his family.

Team Cul de Sac sends its condolences to Richard Morgan and his family.

Team Cul de Sac will be at SC Comicon March 21, 2015!

Team Cul de Sac is going regional! This month we'll be going to Greenville, South Carolina for the first annual Jeremy Dale Drink and Draw at SC Comicon. Jeremy was a wonderful artist who passed away suddenly in November and a friend of Team Cul de Sac who participated in our HeroesCon Drink and Draws.  We're sad that he's no longer with us and hope to do him proud at this new event.  We're also very supportive of his wife, Kelly Dale, and her selected charity, the Heroes Initiative.  Heroes Initiative is great charity that assists comic book creators in need from emergency medical assistance to everyday essentials.

If you've never been to a Drink and Draw, you are in for a fun event.  You don't have to drink or draw to have a good time and help raise money for two fabulous charities.  Anyone is welcome to participate in the drawing.  SC Comicon has generously provided coasters and boards for the event (although we won't say no to a donation for use of these) and artists of both professional and amateur status will be donating their works created that evening for you to purchase.  Chris and Heather will be on hand to facilitate both the drinking and drawing as well as answer any questions you may have about Team Cul de Sac.  Chris will also have copies of The Art of Richard Thompson and Team Cul de Sac: Cartoonists Draw the Line at Parkinson's.

The Drink and Draw will take place Saturday, March 21, 2015 from 7pm to 11pm at Quest Brewing located at 55 Airview Drive, Greenville, SC 29607 This is following the first day of SC Comicon which is from10am-6pm on Saturday and 12pm-6pm on Sunday.

New Eric Shansby painting for Team Cul de Sac

Washington Post cartoonist Eric Shansby has done a painting for Team Cul de Sac's fundraising effort to defeat Parkinson's disease. The painting will be auctioned this spring, but money can be donated at any time.

Shansby took over illustrating Gene Weingarten's Below the Beltway column from Richard Thompson, when Thompson moved on to doing Cul de Sac.

The painting shows Alice and Petey from Cul de Sac, climbing on Ben Franklin, an inspiration for Richard's other Washington Post strip, Richard's Poor Almanac. It is acrylic on canvas board and measures approximately 9"x12".

The painting will also be reproduced in the forthcoming fundraising book, Compleating Cul de Sac, which includes interviews, sketches and 100 Washington Post strips left out of the Complete Cul de Sac.

A thank you for 2014

In 2014 we raised over $84,000.00 for the Michael J Fox Foundation in honor of our wonderful friend Richard Thompson. As always, we have some of the best friends in the world who continue to support this amazing charity. In less than 5 years we have now raised over $200,000.00.
Here are just a few but a very important few that Richard and I are glad to have on on our team.

I have two others I need to give a big shout out to. Bill, who continues to help and dazzles us with some mad skills at the right time.(see above) Bill has been one of our biggest supporters from very early on. His generosity in art donations, signed books and posters has raised over $100,000.00.

The other big shout out goes to my 5 year old, Emily. She told me one night before I went to a book signing the next day that she wanted "to help raise money for Uncle Richard because she wants him to get better and anyone else with Parkinson's plus she can draw just like everyone else can."

She made $50.00 that day. Bill and everybody else better get their "A" game on because she will be catching up to everyone else shortly. Yeap, I am one lucky and proud Dad.
